What Is Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction Causes And Treatments

Erectile Dysfuntion (ED) is an inability to achieve or maintain an erection.

The penis is made up of two separate chambers consisting of spongy tissue called the Corpora Cavernosa.  When a man becomes sexually aroused, the brain sends an increased supply of blood to the penis. This causes the Corpora cavernosa to relax and blood fills the spaces within the tissue.  Pressure increases and in turn the penis expands.

The blood is then kept in place by a membrane called the Tunica albuginea in the Corpora cavernosa resulting in an erection.  When the muscles contract, blood flow is stopped and the penis loses erection.

If the blood is lost frequently, it is known as Erectile Dysfunction.

Because many men do not get help for the condition, it is hard to determine a realistic estimate of sufferers.  However, the general estimate is that 22% of men aged 40 and 49% of men aged 70 and over have erectile problems.

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction

There are a wide range of causes, diseases such as kidney disease, cardiovascular, diabetes and Alcoholism to name just a few.  Alcoholism is also a main cause. Medical conditions are accountable for about 70% of Erectile Dysfunction.

Injury to the penis, bladder, prostate, spinal cord and pelvis can be responsible for ED.

Long term medication can have an adverse effect on obtaining an erection. Drugs for antidepressants, blood pressure, tranquillisers and antihistamines can make achieving an erection difficult. In some cases, changing your medication can help.

Stress

Erectile Dysfunction can be caused by psychological factors.  Stress, depression, work worries can all contribute.  Low self confidence and fear of sexual failure are said to make up as much as 20% of cases of ED.  Smoking can affect blood flow to the penis so giving up could greatly enhance  erection power.

Once you have pinpointed the possible cause of Erectile Dysfuntion, the next step is finding the best course of treatment.

Treatments Include:

Medication

Probably the most well known drug is Slidenafil (Worldwide known as Viagra). It works by increasing the chemical levels that cause the tissues to relax.  Viagra was originally formulated for the treatment of Angina to improve blood flow around the heart.

An effective treatment, but with well documented side effects.  Stomach ache and headaches are among the more mild effects.  More serious ones include blurred vision and tinnitus.  In some cases heart problems and even strokes have been reported.  As with any chemical treatment, Viagra does not suit everyone and must be taken under strict medical supervision.

Injections

Alprostadil is a drug that can be directly administered into the penis tissue.  It can help relax muscles and help to increase blood flow to give an erection.

Vacuum Devices ( Penis Pump)

These work by pushing blood into the penis by placing the penis under a vacuum.  The device has three components, a plastic cylinder, a pump and in some cases an elastic type band.

By placing the cylinder on to the penis, the pump draws air out, the resulting vacuum drawing blood into the penis to generate an erection. and the elastic band is fitted around the base of the penis to keep the erection once the cylinder is removed.

Although this can work.  The results do not always last and there have been reports of damage to the tissue from using some types of penis pumps. Air based ones have been linked to some problems, while the pumps designed to be used in the bath or shower are considered to be safe and in many ways more effective.

Surgery

Preferred treatment as a last resort.  A prosthesis is implanted into the corpora cavernosa allowing the man to adjust the position of the penis. Also, inflatable cylinder can be inserted inside the penis to expand using fluid that is pressurised.

Natural Supplements

Natural treatments have come to the forefront in recent years and have been very effective.  With no side effects, unlike those reported with use of chemical drugs. They have been shown to have proven results.
